Title
The Nightmare #7
Artist
Henry Fuseli
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is a reproduction of Henry Fuseli’s The Nightmare of 1781. This is the artist’s most famous work and was first displayed at the Royal Academy in London in 1782. He re-painted it three times due to its immense popularity. The painting invited criticism due to contemporary concern about its overt sexuality. There is a deliberate contrast between the light coloration of the dreaming figure of a woman and the dark features of the room. The incubus and horse are stark and disturbing creatures of the nightmare and have been variously interpreted. The great interpreter of dreams and nightmare, Sigmund Freud, is reported to have a print of this work in his apartment and Carl Jung referred to the painting in his works. The original work is an oil on canvas measuring 40 by 50 inches and is in the Detroit Institutes of the Arts.
