Artist's Description

This is a reproduction of “The Battle of Waterloo” of 1824 by Jan Willem Pieneman. This is a masterpiece of the Dutch Academic School which depicts the moment when Wellington received the news that the Prussians were approaching the field. Many prominent figures of the Allied side are depicted, including the wounded Crown Prince of the Netherlands, the future William II. The painting was originally intended for Wellington, but King William I bought it for his son. Pieneman studied at Amsterdam’s Stadstekenacademie and at the age of twenty-six was appointed to teach drawing at the college of Amersfoort. He became famous for his depictions of famous scenes from Dutch history and in 1820 became the first director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He died in 1853. This masterpiece is an oil on canvas measuring 567 by 823 centimeters and is in the Rijksmusseum in Amsterdam.
