Artist's Description

This is a reproduction Albert Bierstadt's masterpiece "The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak" of 1863. This oil on canvas painting was based on Bierstadt's sketches of 1859. It was an instant success and sold within two years for $ 25,000. When it was introduced, it was the artist's first one painting showing and almost a thousand people arrived for its first showing. Bierstadt later bought the painting back and gave it to his brother. It was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1907. Bierstadt was born in 1830 Solingen, Germany and moved with his family to Massachusetts the next year. He was a member of the Hudson River School founded by Thomas Cole and first went west in 1859. Though he sold his works for handsome prices, he was not fully appreciated by contemporary art critics. Nevertheless he was elected to the National Academy in 1860. He died in 1902 New York City. This painting in still in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
