Title
The Promise #4
Artist
Henry Scott Tuke
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is a reproduction of "The Promise" of 1888 by Henry Scott Tuke. This masterpiece of oil on canvas is unusual among Tuke's works. Its sentimentality is not typical of Tuke's work which makes it all the more interesting. The models are Jack Rolling and Jessie Nicholls from Flushing, near Falmouth. It was painted in the orchard at Penmere. The ambiguity on Jack's face is at variance with the usual passion of young love. The dimensions of this work is 56.8 by 67.5 centimeters. In 1914 Tu ke was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts having established himself as an independent artist who could afford to work in France, Italy and the West Indies. Tuke died in Falmouth, Cornwall at the age of seventy.
