Title
The Justice of Trajan #3
Artist
Eugene Delacroix
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This masterpiece was painted in 1858 and is based on the legend of the extraordinary attention paid by the Emperor Trajan to the demands of justice from his people. It is based on a passage from Dio Cassius of the Third Century. The legend was enhanced by a passage in Dante’s Divine Comedy of the early Fourteenth Century. The original is a second effort by Delacroix, the first one was painted in 1840. This is an oil on canvas that is currently in the Honolulu Museum of Art. Eugene Delacroix was a leading French Romanticist of the Nineteenth Century. He began his training as a Neo-classicist in 1815 when aged seventeen. He became a sensation seven years later and in 1824 enjoyed a great success with his “Massacre at Chios”. In 1830 he produced his most famous painting, “Liberty leading the People”, which definitely sets the artist apart from Neoclassicism. He was a founder of the National Society of Beaux-Arts and died shortly thereafter in 1863.
