This is a masterpiece of French Impressionism iconic painting and symbolizes the deep mourning that the artist felt over the tremendous losses of the first World War. Though his home at Giverny was in the pathway of the German advance, Monet never left it and could even hear the German guns. Oscar Claude Monet was born in 1840 Paris and founded the Impressionist movement in fine art. At the age of seventeen he began painting "en plein air", an outdoor method of painting in which gestural and suggestive use of oils is made. After two years of military service in Algeria, Monet returned to Paris and painting and initiated the Impressionist style with collaborators, Renoir, Bazille and Sisley. Raised in South Louisiana from 1953, he graduated from Baylor University in 1976 and pursued a Masters in History at the University of Louisiana until 1988 when he moved to Austin, Texas.
