Description
This is a reproduction of “Oath of the Seven Chiefs against Thebes” of about 1800 by Anne Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson. He was thirty-three years old when he painted this masterpiece having been born in Montargis, France. He entered the school of Jacques Louis David and in 1789 won the Prix de Rome at the age of twenty-two years. While in Rome he painted a masterpiece which was exhibited in the Salon of 1793 to great acclaim securing his reputation as the leading painter in France. He became a officer of the Legion of Honor among many other honors. He died in 1824. This early masterpiece was created with black and white chalks on light brown woven paper. It measures 41.8 by 62 centimeters and is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
