Description
This is a reproduction of “Anzacs Bathing in the Sea” of 1914 by George Washington Lambert. He was fifty-one years old when he painted this masterpiece having been born in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was born posthumously and was educated at Kinston College in Somerset, England. The family emigrated to Australia when George was fourteen and he began exhibiting paintings seven years later. He began painting professionally in 1896 and continued his studies at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney for four years. He won a government traveling scholarship and spent a year in Paris and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He received a Silver Medal in Barcelona. He was official war artist for Australia during World War I which he spent mostly in London. After the war he returned to Australia where he won several prizes and had a successful career up to his death in 1931 in Cobbitty, near Camde, New South Wales. The original painting is an oil on canvas measuring 10.3 by 14.1 inches. It is currently in the possession of the Mildura Arts Centre in Mildura, Victoria, Australia.
