Description
Castellan is Spanish for "The Keeper of the Castle". Cerro Castellan looks much like a petrified tree, but it stands over 1000 ft above its surrounding hills. Both it and the Mule Ears are made from eroded lava flows. Castellan is less than half a mile north of the Rio Grande and, being the highest point for miles, is the historical landmark for the early farming settlement of Castellan, built just above the Rio Grande floodplain. Photographs by Dennis Ciscel, presented with his cooperation and permission.
